Frequently Asked Questions:
Is wrestling safe for my child?
The short answer is yes. Here's why:
1. Wrestling has a number of safeguards in place during competition to help prevent injuries. There is one referree for every two athletes. The referee's main job is to ensure safety for both athletes. In fact, it's illegal to intentionally put your opponent in a dangerous position. Almost no other sport has this kind of ratio. There is also a coach in the corner of every athlete to help maintain the safety. To top it off, there is no striking, punching, or submissions like in other martial arts.
2. At the Wrestling Academy of Louisiana, we have relatively small class sizes, and high coach to athlete ratios. This ensures that the athletes get the attention they need to stay safe. Off-task behaviors are limited, so fewer mishaps can occur.
3. As coaches, we strive to do what is best for the athletes. This always includes safety. We partner athletes based on size, age, and ability level to help maintain the productive and safe atmosphere.
4. Our mats are impact rated to help prevent concussions and other impact injuries. We encourage both mouthpieces and headgear to be worn to prevent concussions, mouth/teeth injuries, and ear injuries.
My child has no experience. Can he still come?
Of course! We would recommend him to be in the beginner's class first. These are year round classes that meet on Monday and Wednesday evening from 5 - 6, but it is possible to work out another solution if the classes will not work.
When can my child join a class?
If he does have experience, he can join Future Champions or Varsity at any time. There is no registration fee, but you do need a USA Wrestling membership, and we do ask that you let us know you're coming, so we can give you a proper greeting.
Can my child compete against others?
Yes, he can. Although it is not required for our athletes to compete, for most of them, it is a "payoff" for all their hard work. Coaches accompany athletes to all of the tournaments. You can see the most up to date schedule of competitions here. We recommend not competing until an athlete has wrestled for at least 6 months. This ensures that he will be able to participate safely.
What style of wrestling do you teach?
The majority of the wrestling we teach is Collegiate, or folkstyle. This is the type that high schools and universities around the country participate in.
We also offer Olympic styles (Freestyle and Greco-Roman) training from April through July. Those months are the competition season for the two styles.
Why does my child need a USA wrestling card?
In order for our insurance to cover us, all participants need a USA Wrestling Membership. It costs $40 per athlete. It covers both us and you in case something severe happens. Though it is extremely rare for something to occur, we have to have the insurance just in case.
